Summer grooming tips for your dog

by Akshay Mirchandani

Summer is around the corner and we can already feel the heat rising. And if we can feel it, so can our little furry best friends. Here are a few grooming tips you should follow to keep your dog looking and feeling his best this summer:

  1. Bathing & Brushing

The heat may cause you to increase the frequency of your dog’s baths but try to stick to your regular schedule to avoid any irritation on your dog’s skin. Also, make sure you don’t get water in your dog’s eyes, ears and mouth while giving them a bath. You may also want to shave your dog’s coat to avoid overheating but remember that the dog’s coat protects him from harmful UV radiation and the heat. Brush your dog’s coat regularly to get rid of the excess dead hair and for your dog to stay cool.

2.Ticks & Fleas

Your little one is over exposed to these devious creatures in the summer, so, you have got to be extra careful. After every walk, make sure you check your dog thoroughly for any ticks, especially around his head and ears. Also, look out for fleas and their eggs by using a flea comb regularly. Ensure that your dog is using an anti-tick and anti-flea shampoo to avoid these parasites.

 3. Ear Care

Humidity and heat can cause excess bacteria and yeast in your dog’s ears so a good ear care procedure is important. Clean your dog’s ears weekly using a cotton ball and do so gently to avoid any discomfort in your dog.

4.Paw Care

Our little ones love their walks but the heat can cause a lot of pain to their sensitive paws. Try to take your dog for a walk either early in the morning or late in the evening as the ground remains cooler at such times. You can also use paw wax which prevents drying and cracking during summer. After every walk, wipe your dog’s paws with a cool, damp cloth to keep him clean and cool.
