House Training your cat

by Akshay Mirchandani

The good news is that kittens and cats are super easy to train. All you have to do is ensure the cat’s litter box is ready. You don’t even have to train the cat to use the litter box since your cat’s natural instincts to bury its stools will guide it straight to the litter box. Here are a few tips that will come in handy when your new best friend is finally home:

  1. Litter Box

There’s a plethora of options when it comes to choosing a litter box for your kitty. But, make sure you buy one that is at least 4 inches deep and big enough so that your cat doesn’t feel cramped while using it. Also, make sure the one you choose to buy is easy to clean and sterilise.

2.Litter

Just like the litter box, you have many options to choose from for the litter. You can choose sand, shredded newspaper, wood shavings, but, the best one out of them all is the commercially prepared cat litter which is made out of ground clay as it is sanitary and convenient. Over a few days, you may find your cat disliking the type of litter you are using, so if you find it scoffing at the litter box, you should consider trying another type of litter.

3. Placement of the Litter Box

Make sure you place the pan in an easily accessible and convenient area, but make sure it is well out of your way while moving around. Fill the litter box with about 2 inches of litter and not more because your cat might end up scattering the excess litter all over the floor.

4. Training your Cat

If you are adopting an older cat, all you have to do is place the cat in the litter pan once to show it where it is located and the job is done. On the other hand, if you bring home a kitten, you should keep in mind that kittens tend to forget where the litter box is located, so keep the litter box in close proximity to the kitten for the first few days. Soon, the kitten will recognise the pan and slowly you can start moving the pan to a more convenient location.

 5. Cleanliness

A clean cat is a happy cat! Most cats end up “going” in other places if they find their litter box dirty. So, make sure you clean the litter box clean by changing the soiled litter frequently.
